DJ, entertainer, MC: one job, three names

Depending on where you're from, you might search for a wedding "DJ", an "entertainer", or an "MC" — and in Portugal, for a destination wedding, these are usually the same person. Someone has to play the music, someone has to announce the entrance and the speeches, and someone has to read the room when half the guests don't share a language. Splitting that across three people adds hand-offs, and hand-offs are where destination weddings go wrong.

What to actually ask before you book

• What language is the microphone in? Not "do you speak English" — ask whether the whole evening, including jokes and timing cues, runs in English, or whether you'll get a translated version of a Portuguese show.
• How many weddings have they hosted for international guests? A DJ who's great for a local crowd may have never had to read a room with six nationalities in it.
• Is the MC and the DJ the same person? If not, ask how the hand-off between the ceremony host and the DJ works — that gap is where dead air happens.
• Do they work with your wedding planner? A destination wedding usually has a planner running logistics from a distance. Your entertainment team should be used to fitting into that timeline, not setting their own.
• What happens if you're not in Portugal to meet in person? Most of the planning for a destination wedding happens by email and video call — that should be normal for them, not an inconvenience.
